C. C. C. Writing Contest Pt. 7

 Chapter 7

"Shush, my pet, you'll wake the neighbors."  The bandit admonished, sliding a knife under Jessie's chin.  A bandit next to him laughed.  Jessie saw Ava struggling to get free as another bandit tied her on a chair.
"You won't get away with this!" Ava threatened, giving up on trying to escape.
    "That's what they all say."
Ava sat up straight and raised her chin in response.
The bandit holding Jessie started dragging her to another chair out of reach from Ava.  She could do nothing, but make herself a weight.  It hardly made a difference, though.
"Here's another one," came a gruff voice.
Jessie craned her neck from where she was tied and saw Nick in the grasp of yet another bandit.  From the moonlight she could see that they were both dusted with glass on their shoulders.  The bandit's lip dripped blood and Nick had small cuts around his forehead.
"Sit."  The bandit ordered.  "Sit!"  He yelled, not waiting more than a second, and hit him with a stick.  Nick groaned and stumbled, his hands tied behind him.
"Come here, Mr. Cobb." The obvious leader of the pack commanded, one hand behind his back, one resting on his gun holster.
"Aye, Sir?"  Mr. Cobb flinched, but walked obediently towards him.
"You don't just throw yourself out a window, what happened?"  The leader started talking in hushed tones.  Jessie could barely hear them.
"I stumbled searching in the dark and he,"  The bandit nodded toward Nick,"shoved me out a window.  I grabbed hold of him, though, and tied 'em up."  He sounded pleased at the end.
"Be more careful next time.  You could've cost us the surprise advantage."
    "Aye, Sir. Sorry, Sir."
"Now, one of you grab the red-head and we'll be on our way."  The leader started walking out.
"What about the boy?"  A different bandit asked.
He turned his head slightly.  "Tie him up like the rest.  And, Mr. Cobb," The leader faced him again with a glower,"make sure everyone is secured in their bonds.  We have a bounty to collect and we don't want any meddling kids stopping us."
A bandit came towards Daisy.  She flicked her hand up and a vine came out, slapping him across the face. Jessie gaped at the sight. Daisy waved her arms and she was surrounded by vines, like a shield.  Random vines flicked out at the bandits who tried to get closer.  Then, a bandit shot something at Daisy.  It went through the shield and hit her arm. Daisy yelped and gasped as a black band encircled her arm.  She was powerless with it on.
"Made from the queen herself."  Ava whispered, shocked.
Daisy tried to get away as a bandit came, thrashing her arms around wildly, but he picked her up easily, like a sack of potatoes.
Jessie was too scared to yell for her friend and knew it would be useless.  They were all helpless, stuck in their bonds.
What are we gonna do?  Jessie thought hopelessly, looking after the dark figures fading away.
She heard banging from where Ava was trying to break free.
    "No use."  Ava muttered.
Jessie tried to slowly squeeze her hands out, but the knots were too tight.  She sighed and gave up.  Then, the floor creaked ahead of her.  She caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure before he darted away.
They're back to kill us.  Jessie's eyes grew wide, now searching intently into the darkness.  Her mouth went dry as she was about to call the person out.
All of a sudden, a feminine voice whispered in her ear, "Are they still here?"  Before Jessie screamed from instinct, a hand covered her mouth.  "You don't want to alarm them do you?"  Then, the teen lifted her hand off.
"N-no bandits are here."  Jessie answered, assuming that's what she meant.
    "Good."  Came the blunt reply.
Jessie felt her sawing at the rope.  "I'm Jessie."
"Skylar."  The ropes fell of her wrists and the teen handed Jessie a knife. "Cut the rest of your ropes." She glanced at Skylar and saw that she was dressed to camouflage with shadows. She had tan skin and big brown eyes. The only thing that wasn't dark were the orange highlighted side-swept bangs from her black shoulder-length hair, which was mostly covered by the hood of her jacket.
Jessie finished untangling herself and flung the ropes to the ground. She fingered her neck where the bandit's dagger cut.  It stung to the touch, but it wasn't deep.  Jessie turned around to help the others, but Skylar was already back holding Sam's hand and with Ava and Nick free from their ropes.
"I know how to get Daisy back." Skylar said, taking on the leader role.  "We just have to get close to their campsite and I can do the rest.  You guys will hide in the forest and wait for me."  She crossed her arms. "Ready?"
"So, you think we can't handle this without you?"  Ava challenged.
"Yes, I know more about them than you do."
"We don't even know you!  How can we trust that you're not on their side?"
"Hmm, I wonder."  Skylar tapped her chin..  "Oh, wait!" She snapped her fingers, "Didn't I free you?"
"Why do you want to help us in the first place?"  Nick cut in before a cat fight started.
"Because I want her free just as much as you.  She's my step-sister!"  Skylar paced the floor and came back calmer.  "I'm Erika's twin.  She told me to protect Daisy if she was away."  She hesitated before saying, "I'm sorry for coming off defensive.  I'm trying to get my family back together and I don't want any other setbacks."  She patted Sam's shoulder.
    Jessie stepped forward. "I'm ready."
    "Count me in." Nick agreed.
Ava looked around at us and smiled.  "Let's go, then."

Jessie, Nick, Ava, and Sam hid on the edge of a pine forest, just a few yards from the bandit hideout.  They watched as Skylar casually strode in the campsite. She looked left and right, searching for signs of Daisy. Does she know what she's doing? Jessie watched as a bandit strolled up to Skylar.  She could clearly make out their conversation.
"And what do we owe the honor of Blaze here tonight...or should I call you Skylar?  He spat on the ground.
"I'm here to make a deal, Pig Face."
"I wouldn't try to insult me again. You know what I'm capable of."  He cracked his knuckles.
"And you know what I'm capable of."
He guffawed. "Like I'm scared of a girl."
"Well,"  Skylar sighed dramatically and acknowledged the others walking around camp, "I guess you don't mind if I tell the others where the stolen cash went."
The bandit glared at her trying to be intimidating, but Skylar held the stare.
"She's not even flinching."  Jessie whispered, awed.
"Sky used to be one of 'em." Sam said nonchalantly.
    "Wait, what?"
    "Shh."  Ava chided.
Finally, Skylar shrugged and started turning away. The bandit cleared his throat. Skylar faced him with crossed arms, with no hint of a smile.
"Wait here.  Rupert has been wanting to speak to you anyway."  He muttered.
He came back moments later with an older man with sleek white hair.  He wore a dark red coat that made his head look too small for his body and walked with a pompous gait.
"Skylar, so good to see you again." Rupert said with a shrewd smile.
    "Is it?" Skylar smirked.
"Not in the least bit."  He squinted with displeasure.
"I'm here to make a deal."
"Yes, yes. I heard.  Follow me, love."
Skylar followed as Rupert ducked into a tent.  The others could see their shadows, but couldn't hear what they were saying.
"What do you think she's trying to trade for Daisy?"  Jessie asked.
"It would have to be something worth more than whoever is willing to pay for Daisy.  Which is probably Carmay."  Ava responded.
"They're pirates. All they want is money."  Nick said, annoyed.

Jessie felt a shove and instantly woke up, not knowing she fell asleep.
"Wake up!  We have to run."  Skylar poked her again.
"Did they not take the deal?"
"Oh no, they took it alright.  They just didn't want to give up Daisy until I had the person to trade for her.  Of course, we need Daisy's help to get her."
"Who...did...you...say?"  Jessie groaned hoping that Skylar didn't make an impossible deal.
    "Oh, just the queen."
"So, you freed Daisy from a bandit camp," Jessie said, pointing at Daisy with her thumb who was waking up the others behind her, "and you made a deal to kidnap 'just' the queen?  You might as well put a death-wish over your head."
"We have no time to chat nonsense.  We have to go!"  Skylar looked over her shoulder. Bandits were already yelling in confusion.
Skylar grabbed Sam's hand and started sprinting. The rest of them raced after, bounding deeper into the dim forest.
Jessie looked behind her shoulder and saw the bandits advancing. "They're catching up!"
Leading them into lots of twists and turns was Skylar's tacit reply.  They soon found themselves behind a massive boulder, shielded by a dense growth of trees.
"Are... we safe here?"  Jessie's heart pounded in her ears as she caught her breath.
"I know these woods well.  They shouldn't be able to find us."  Skylar whispered.
"I'm tired. Can we sleep here, Sky?"  Sam whined.
Skylar stood and brushed herself off. She walked in front of the boulder, scanning the area, and replied, "Yes, I think it's safe to make camp here tonight."
"Ah, Skylar.  You almost lost me!  Thankfully, I've been studying these woods too."  A voice boomed from the shadows of the trees.
Skylar's eye's became wide and her mouth opened slightly.  Ava, Nick, and Jessie came out from behind the boulder, leaving Daisy to soothe Sam.
"Your expression is priceless. One of the rare moments where you don't look yourself.  Stunned...speechless...amazed...maybe even intimidated...just because of me?"  A bandit, who looked to be around Skylar's age, walked out from underneath the canopy of trees. His bright blue eyes contrasted with his dark hair and his style of clothing looked post-apocalyptic. He had a scabbard on one side of his hip and a holster on the other.
"Shane, you still haven't grown up since the last time I saw you.  An arrogant child."  Skylar retorted, regaining composure.
Shane put his hand to his heart and contorted his face.  "Oh, the pain," He pretended to cough, "it hurts."
"I'm not afraid of making it real."  Skylar put her hands on her hips pushing aside her jacket revealing several hidden daggers.
"The delight I feel when I push your buttons." He smirked. "I'm here to retrieve someone.  Mind you hand her over before you or your comrades get hurt?"  He acknowledged the others with a nod.
"I'd rather not."  Skylar pulled out a dagger from her jacket.  She pressed something on the front of the grip and a full blade swept out.  "If you want her, you'll have to go through me."
"And us." Ava stepped up, dagger in hand.  Nick and Jessie followed suit.
"I'll give you a fight, but don't say I didn't warn you and, unless you want me to call the others, it will be just me and Skylar."  Ava, Nick, and Jessie didn't back down.
"Guys, I've got this." Skylar said firmly and added, "This is child's play."  They reluctantly rested on the boulder at her insistence.
"I wouldn't be so confident."  Shane drew out his sword and flipped it in his hand, starting the combat.
Skylar started off on offense, making firm and precise movements.  Shane took the impacts without hesitance and swung back.  The dual went on, several times switching who was offense and defense.  The clashing of metal on metal reverberated in Jessie's mind.  She held her breath, not knowing what the outcome would be.  Suddenly, Skylar jumped back from Shane's blow and lost balance when she landed on uneven ground.  Shane took the opportunity to disarm her.
He pointed his sword her. "Hah! That was child's play. Now hand her over."
"No." She said with a deadpan face.
He snorted. "Like you have a choice. Hand her over or I'll-"
Skylar jerked her wrist around, palm facing up, and fire flickered in her hand illuminating her face. Jessie gawked at the sight even though she'd just seen Daisy do something similar.  Her head spun as she came to believe there really were unnatural powers. She focused on Skylar as she manipulated the fire into her other hand with swift, graceful movements.
"I thought Erika only had the fire power." Daisy whispered, now standing up.
Shane didn't look daunted at the sight. "I don't think that's fair."
"This is life, not a game. Now, leave before I char you."
He shook his head and started backing up, but Jessie caught him glance ever-so-slightly to the left of Skylar.
The hairs on her neck stood up and she knew something was about to happen. Without forethought, Jessie raised her hands just as someone shot at Skylar from behind. She felt as if a concentrated force of air escaped from her lungs, slithered through her arms and came out of her hands, flying towards the designated target. A small clear pellet with inklike liquid fell to the ground inches from Skylar. Jessie's mouth hung open. D-did I just do that?
Skylar saw it drop beside her and snatched it with her free hand. She lowered her eyebrows and clenched her jaw, hardly keeping her voice from yelling. "You tried to put a band on me just like Daisy? How dare you try to cage me up!" The fire in her hand grew.
"Put the fire away or I'll shoot your friend here." Shane said coolly. Ava didn't even cower as he pointed a gun at her head.
The bandit who was behind Skylar stood next to Shane holding the same gun that was shot at Daisy.  "That was the last one." He mumbled.
Skylar was fuming. She closed her fist, extinguishing the fire, but held out her hand still.
"Much better." Shane didn't put down the gun. "Give up and hand her over. I'm getting restless and my finger might slip-"  He shouted out and threw the gun to the ground, shaking his hand violently.
"Gun's a bit to hot to handle?" Skylar had one hand behind her back and the other she held out, creating fire again. She shot right above Shane and the bandit, singeing their hair. "Leave us!" She held the fire and was about to throw again.
"We will come back and when we do, you had better be prepared." Shane threatened picking up his cooled off gun, then he and the other bandit ran off. Everyone stood there, speechless at what had happened.
Skylar brushed off her hands. "Shall we make camp?"

The fire crackled while everyone slept, everyone except Jessie. She closed her eyes, but her mind was spinning. She tilted her head and saw Skylar sitting on a log a few feet from everyone else. Jessie sat up and walked over.
"Can't sleep either?" Jessie sat next to Skylar.
"I've had plenty of sleepless nights. This is no different." Skylar sat in silence for a few minutes before saying, "Thanks for saving me back there."
"How did I do it? It felt so strange."  Jessie said wide-eyed.
"You have the power of the wind." Skylar said as if all this was normal.
"All these years and I never knew." Jessie half said to herself.
"Usually you're told at a young age. People knew Erika, my sister, had the power of fire, but they didn't know I did."  Skylar glanced over her shoulder at the others and then looked straight into Jessie's eyes. "Jessie," She hesitated before continuing, "Ava isn't who you think she is."
Jessie stared at her with an expression of shock.
    "I'm sorry, I said that a bit quick...just be careful...and don't repeat this.

C.C.C. Writing Challenge Pt. 6

Chapter 6

Jessie caught Nick's arm to slow him down just as he was about to join the others outside.  The small clan was going to hangout around a bonfire.  "Hey, um, this might sound strange, but I think Daisy is hiding something...like...I don't know...maybe," Jessie stammered as she tried to think of the right words to say, "she has unordinary powers."
Nick raised his eyebrows at her.  "Unordinary powers?  Sure, I guess there are people from different planets, but 'powers'?"  He quoted with his fingers.  "You've got to be kidding me."
"Just keep your eyes on her."  Jessie whispered, so Daisy wouldn't hear, as they sat around the bonfire.  He glanced at her as if to say, Fine, but I think you're crazy.  Jessie clenched her jaw.  She did not like to be thought of as "crazy".

"So, do you see any constellations?"  Jessie asked Daisy.  They were both laying on the ground huddled in blankets now that the fall night became chilly.  Nick and Ava had retreated into the warm "base," so it was just the two of them.
"Just the Big Dipper and Little Dipper."  Daisy pointed each of them out.  "My friend is better at finding them than me."
    "What is your friend's name?"
    "Erika."
Jessie didn't want to be nosy, but couldn't resist asking, "You said something in our little chat, this morning, about something that happened to her, but didn't finish.  Can you tell me?"
Daisy took her time before answering, "She was brutally kidnapped just because she didn't give someone what they wanted.  Now I don't know where she is."  Jessie could barely see tears in Daisy's eyes in the fading light.
"Why are you guys so close?  She's not your family."  Jessie immediately felt guilty for asking.
Daisy looked a little offended.  "But she was!  You see, my parents were in an...accident...so Erika's family took me in.  I was very angry about life.  Erika helped me back up on my feet."  Daisy laughed a little, but it came out more like a sigh.
Jessie stared into the fire that was glowing only from the embers now.  All of a sudden, a big burst of fire came alive again.
Jessie jumped, not expecting that, and gaped at the fire.  "How did that-"  She watched a ribbon of fire dance and wave around away from the rest.
Daisy saw it, too, and gasped.  She stood up and ran into the base calling for Ava.  Jessie was confused and squinted at the dancing flames a bit harder, but ran in after Daisy.  She didn't know what it was, but she knew that Daisy did.
Jessie followed Ava and Daisy to a car in the underground garage and hopped in after them.  Jessie guessed that Nick caught the memo as he came to the car as well.
"Um, what are you guys doing?"  Daisy asked.
"Well, it seems that there is a problem and we want to help."  Jessie replied, acknowledging Nick and herself.  Daisy looked at Ava, almost pleadingly.
"They might as well know."  Ava responded to her expression.  Then, started driving out of the garage into a tunnel that led to a "real" street.
Daisy sighed, but explained, "That big burst of fire that you saw, Jessie, was a signal of help sent to me.  There are some people, five to be exact, that escaped to this world when Carmay destroyed theirs, just like how she destroyed your birth planet.  This may seem strange, but they have unique...abilities.  These five people can control either water, fire, wind, nature, or space."  She seemed wary of what she told.
Jessie gave an I-told-you-so look at Nick, but he was fastening his seat belt and not looking up at her.  On purpose, probably.  Jessie rolled her eyes and fastened hers too.
"Carmay has been searching for those five people ever since, so that she may learn the different powers.  She's succeeded in finding most of them.  My friend, Erika, is the person who can control fire, but only when she's near the area she wants it. Since she sent me the signal, she must've escaped Carmay and probably needs help, so we are heading where the signal indicated..."
We all gasped simultaneously as Ava pulled into the grassy lot in the middle of nowhere.
Smoke ascended up from the isolated house in slithering spirals. Windowpanes were shattered and bricks were fallen out of place.  The door was wrecked to bits and the grass around it was charred.  Mist from the cold, dewy ground mixing with the heat from the used-to-be fire made the scene creepier.
Daisy ran inside before anyone could stop her.  Ava handed each of the others a flashlight. This time Jessie took precautions and didn't run in straight away.
After checking the perimeter, Jessie crept inside the deserted-looking house with Ava and Nick trailing behind.  Looks like they had an obsession with china plates.  Jessie thought as she stepped over several fragments of floral, striped, animal printed, and other exotically designed china plates.
She finally found Daisy crouched, staring at a picture.  Jessie heard sniffles coming from the girl as she squatted next to her.
"They were my second family and now they, too, are gone."  Daisy stuffed the small picture in her jacket pocket.
"A family's love is always with you."  Jessie hugged her.  "Let's go see if we can find anything here to give us a clue to what happened."  She said to get Daisy's attention on something else.
"Carmay did this, obviously.  I have no idea why, though."  Daisy stood up and wiped the tears from her eyes, then, the girls started investigating.
Jessie skimmed her hand over different books including: The Story of Fire and The Importance of Knowing Your Power while looking for clues.  She let out a long, tired yawn; Jessie didn't know exactly what to look for.
Her heart jumped into her throat when her flashlight flicked across a hand on the ground.  Jessie let out a startled cry when she saw an unconscious body.
"What is it?"  Ava was the first to rush over.
"There is a boy on the floor."  Jessie overcame her shock and sat down next to the child to check his pulse.
"Sam!"  Daisy cried out when she saw the boy.  "Is he..."
"No..."  Jessie let out a sigh of relief, as did the others.
    Crash!
"What was that?"  She yelped, jumping to her feet on instinct.
"Where's Nick?"  Ava whispered, dagger in hand.  She scanned the room, but didn't dare move.
There was a moment of silence as the girls tried peering into the darkness.
"Do you think it's-"  Daisy started, but stopped when she heard the boy trying to utter something out of his dry lips.  Ava and Jessie crouched near him to hear better.
"They're...still-"  Sam coughed, licked his lips, and tried again, "They're still here."
"Who, Sam?  Who's here?"  Daisy gently asked.
"It's a trap!"  Sam, now fully aware of what was happening, gave out a wail and hid his head behind his arms.
Jessie shrieked as, out of nowhere, someone yanked her up by her hair, his nails digging into her scalp.

C. C. C. Writing Contest Pt. 5

Chapter 5

Jessie moaned as the green alarm clock rang at 4:30 a.m., like every morning since a few days ago.  She had to wake up early for training sessions as Ava had said, "You need to get as much practice in as you can before Carmay comes."
Jessie flung one of her arms from under her quilt to turn the alarm off, but missed and slammed her palm right next to the clock on the wooden bedside table.  She raised her hand, turned off the alarm and was quickly getting out of bed, while massaging her stinging hand, when her foot became tangled in her quilt and she tripped onto the white colored rug that covered the cold, hardwood floor.  Jessie moaned again while lightly punching the floor, her foot still tangled on the bed.
After she recovered from her fall, Jessie sighed and smiled.  Today is gonna be a great day!  She thought, hoping to forget what just happened.  She picked up the glass of water on her bedside table to take a drink, but it slipped from her hands and spilled over the front of her pajamas.  Tears of frustration sprang to her eyes as the freezing water soaked through her woolly clothes.

"You look like a storm cloud!  What's wrong?"  Ava asked while polishing a sword.  Jessie had quickly changed and raced to the training arena, while eating a granola bar she had taken from the kitchen.  She bit her tongue in the process.
"Nothing much."  Jessie grumbled not wanting to explain her miserable story.  She grabbed her bow and took it to the target practice area.  Nick was already there practicing with throwing knives, his specialty choice.
Jessie raised her bow and aimed at the target.  She let go of the bowstring, but the electric-tipped arrow whirred past the target.  She loaded another arrow, pulled back the bowstring, and let go.  Again, she missed.  She aimed a third and fourth time and still missed terribly.  Jessie had to clench her jaw to keep from tearing her bow apart.
    "Aim-"
"I know, I know!"  Irritated, Jessie interrupted Ava, who was trying to help her.  Jessie heard Ava sigh and Nick whistle softly.  Jessie was embarrassed from her outburst, but was too frustrated to apologize.  She tried several more times to hit the target, but either missed or hit the very edge of the board.  Jessie was getting very angry, now, and felt like she was going to explode.  She started aiming again.
    "Hey, Jessie?"
"What?!"  Jessie turned around and shot the arrow right between Ava and another girl, who were several feet away, smashing a vase on a shelf a few more feet away.  "Oops..."  Jessie whispered, mortified.  A startled laugh broke the silence that reigned for a few minutes then the girl cupped her hand over her mouth like she wasn't supposed to laugh.
Ava grinned, coming out of the shock.  "I knew you could aim well!  Just like your father!"
"Heh."  Jessie replied to the sarcastic comment.  Still embarrassed, she carefully put her bow away and walked up to Ava and the girl.  "Um, sorry 'bout that."  Jessie scratched her head and stared at her feet.  She was blushing terribly about, both, her outburst and misfire.
"Haha!  That's...okay."  The girl stared at Ava, getting quieter with each word, like she had to wait for Ava to speak first.  The shy girl, then, started rubbing her fingers on her ear where an earring would be and blushed lightly.
Ava smiled gently at the girl then back at Jessie.  "As I was going to introduce her to you in the first place, this is Daisy Peterson.  She's here to train for the battle.  I forgot to mention to you that I hosted recruitment training's, to get more fighters for the battle, before you stumbled upon this place.  I'm going to clean up the glass and let you two get to know each other."
"Hi."  Jessie smiled politely, waving her hand in a small circle as Ava walked away.  "I'm Jessie Reese.  Nice to meet you."
"You too."  Daisy smiled back and tucked her long, curly, red hair behind her ear.  She had hazel eyes that popped against her pale face.  She wore a simple outfit comprised of a gray fitted t-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes.
There was a long moment of silence as they both awkwardly looked at each other.  Why would she want to talk to someone who could've killed her if her aim was wrong? The thought unexpectedly popped in Jessie's mind as she thought of what to say to the shy girl.   She decided to ask the first thing that came to mind.   "Um, want to take a walk outside?"  Ah, great.  Nice one.  What kind of a question is that?  "I mean, like, get some fresh air and talk and..."  Jessie tried to fix the weird question.
"Sure."  Daisy agreed, her eyes laughing.

"...and that's how I ended up here."  Jessie sighed as she finished her story for Daisy.
"Mhm, that's interesting."  Daisy said, but her gaze was fixed upon a dandelion she was twirling in her pale fingers and she smiled as if reminiscing something.  "My mother used to weave dandelions throughout my hair.  I would sit very still as if any movement would make my mother disappear.  You see, she was hardly ever home."
"At least you had a mom..."  Jessie murmured to herself, but Daisy apparently heard.
"I'm so sorry! I totally forgot about you!"  Daisy blushed bright red, looking guilty.
"That's okay."  Jessie waved off the comment.  "What do you like to do in your spare time?"  She hoped to strike up another conversation with the girl so she wouldn't become quiet and shy again.
"I love hiking, gardening, and, basically, all things nature!"  Daisy answered, her face turning a shade lighter.  "My second favorite thing to do is look at the stars and search for constellations at night!  My friend and I would find our own and laugh at them, but then she was- well, never mind."
What is she hiding?  Jessie wondered, but then answered her own question to keep the conversation going.  "I like to write and love riding horses, but, as you know from my story," Jessie sighed, "Goliath was taken from me."
"I guess we have at least one thing in common; we both lost someone we loved."  Daisy softly spoke looking down at her hands.  "But, I'm going to get my friend back." Daisy finished under her breath.
"What did you say?"  Jessie asked.
"That we should probably be heading back."
But Jessie was positive that she heard differently.  She watched Daisy as she walked back to the base while touching every partially wilted flower.  They seemed to liven up and stare at her.  Some mysterious part of this story wasn't told to Jessie.

C. C. C. Writing Contest Pt. 4

Chapter 4

"So, do you know these people?"  Nick whispered to Jessie who was sitting next to him at the dining table.   Jessie, Nick, Ava, and the three guards were quiet while they were eating, except for a few whispers here and there.
"No, but they think they know me."  Jessie whispered back.
"How's that?"  Nick looked more focused on his food at the moment.
"I, supposedly, came from a different world and my 'real name' is Ilene."   Jessie still doubted that.
    "Interesting."
Jessie poked at her food, but caught the words of the guard, Rayner, whispering to Ava, "She was a tiny baby back then, how do you know if Ilene is her?   He tilted his head ever so slightly at Jessie.
"Do you not trust me, Captain?"  Ava asked aloud, surprised at the question.
"Yes, I do.  Sorry, M'lady."  Rayner stood up and sauntered out.
Jessie and Nick raised their eyebrows at each other, both shocked at the small dispute that just took place.  Ava shook her head, looking disappointed.  "Supper is over.  Everyone is dismissed."  Ava stood up.  "Nick and Ilene, I mean, Jessie, follow me."

How many rooms does this base have?  It's more like a mansion.  Jessie thought as she sat down on a cushion in a living room.  Jessie, Nick, and Ava were spaced around a glass coffee table.  In the middle was a red, sheer vase filled with a few flowers that looked like silver lilies.  Those can't be real.  Jessie touched them, however, just to make sure.  She pulled her hand away, quickly, realizing they felt real.
"Those are, indeed, lilies, as they call them here."  Ava smiled, reading her mind.  "And the silver is real!  In our land, we used to have fields of them!  Gold, silver, bronze, diamond, ruby and others.  It was so pretty."  Ava seemed to be in a haze.  "Anyway, I wanted to tell you about why we came here from our world, and to prove that you, Jessie, are actually Ilene."  She said snapping back to reality.  Jessie gulped, not sure if she was ready or wanting to hear the truth.  Nick, on the other hand, was ready for this "interesting" story.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was, once, a land named Atrolia.  Ruled by the peacekeepers, King Tourel and Queen Finlyn, they've kept peace with the other lands for decades.  They have never needed guards or knights, so they stopped recruiting them.  More dropped out as they weren't required.  The captain of the knights, Kopor, didn't drop out, as he knew, if anyone wanted to take over Atrolia, the king wouldn't have enough knights to fight.  He secretly held training's for civilians to attend.  Kopor would make them hunt for food, as well as other different practices, so they wouldn't think they were unneeded and drop out.
    Suddenly, a month after all this, Carmay, the queen of another land near Atrolia, started attacking villages near the castle.  Carmay never liked keeping peace and enjoyed fighting.  She knew if she waited long enough there wouldn't be enough knights, in Atrolia, to fight her's.  The king and queen were terrified, but Kopor told them what he did.  He sent the trained civilians to battle, though there still weren't as many knights as Carmay's.  She and her men destroyed village after village, knight after knight.  The king's knights were diminishing fast, so the rest stayed at the castle.
    During all this, Kopor's wife, Rayna, gave birth to a girl, named Ilene.  They were both captured, along with Avalon, Rayna's young sister, who was 14 years old at the time.  Carmay would use them for a trade, she hoped.  She captureed them because the queen and king didn't have a child and Kopor was their most trusted captain.
    After she received approval to see King Tourel and Queen Finlyn, she told them her trade.  She would give Rayna, Ilene, and Avalon back if she could rule this land and Tourel and Finlyn would be banished.  If not that, then Carmay would take the captives and leave.
Before the king could answer, a knight ran in announcing the death of Kopor.  He had been trampled by horses protecting a little girl trying to catch her loose pet, that she adored.  When Rayna heard this, she fell apart.  She sobbed and managed to say that she would rather leave with Carmay than live here without Kopor, so the trade was set.  Carmay smirked, pulled out a small item and said that she never said where they would leave.  She threw the object on the ground and it turned into a portal.  She unlocked the cage and dragged the victims out.  Then she changed her mind saying that she would rather all of Atrolia die, instead.  She had planted a huge bomb in the center of Atrolia.  Carmay had meant for all this to happen.  Very quickly, Rayna, who could do any spell she wanted once in her life, put a saftey spell on Ilene.  Ilene would be immune from Carmay's power till she was 16.  Then, Rayna told Avalon to take Ilene and protect her and tell her everything that has happened.   They would have to defeat Carmay, so she wouldn't destroy the place where they were going.  Carmay had just went through the portal, so Avalon jumped in before it would disappear.
Walking through light and darkness, it was hard for Avalon to see where the portal was taking them.  Then, a big bounce made her lose hold of Ilene.  She was trying to find her through the flashes of light, but Carmay found her first.  She tried to kill her, but realized that she was under a spell.  Carmay took Ilene while Avalon was hiding, scared for Ilene's and her life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When we arrived at our destination, which was in a busy city, thankfully, Carmay didn't see me.  She went her own way and I ran through forest after forest until I found this.  You should have seen me, though!  I was jumping at the littlest things, like when people wearing hoodies bumped past me with things stuck in their ears, which I now know are called earbuds!  I thought it was some kind of mind control thing!"  Ava laughed as she finished her story.  "Oh, and somehow the knights came here too! They must've found another portal and came to help me defeat Carmay!  I'm glad because three against her wouldn't be a very happy ending."  Ava finished with one breath.
"So, how does this tell me I'm Ilene?"  Jessie asked, still doubting the whole story.
"Well, on your sixteenth birthday your spell's time will be up.  Meaning you won't be protected.  After this happens, like with all spells, you will find a design or something on your arms somewhere!  Plus, I know when I've found the right girl!"  Ava said smiling.
"My sixteenth birthday is tomorrow."  Jessie chewed her lip.  If all of this really is true, she would have to help defeat an evil queen, who was her mom for fifteen years.  "So, you would be my aunt?"  I asked realizing this from the story.
"Yep!"  Ava grinned.  "Well, I'll show you guys to your rooms.  You guys must be tired from your trek.  There are clean clothes in each of your rooms."
"You knew I was coming too?"  Nick asked skeptically.
"We prepare for anything!"  Ava responded, laughing.

Jessie plopped down on her new bed.  Her bedroom was painted sky blue and decorated with green and white furniture.  It felt nice to be dressed in comfy pajamas again.  She went to sleep hoping this was all a dream and would wake up in her simple life once again, but that was not to be so.

"Happy birthday!!"  Ava whispered in Jessie's face.  Jessie groaned, moving her pillow over her face.   "I have a present for you!  Wake up!!! Please!?"  Ava was shaking her now.
"Ugh... fine."  Jessie pushed herself to a sitting position, still blurry-eyed.  Ava laid something in her lap.  Jessie wiped her eyes and looked at what Ava gave her.  It was a black bow and arrow set with electric blue lines throughout the bow and the on the tips of the arrows.
"I made this!  It's an electric bow!  The arrows also have electricity in them!  Basically, the arrows fly farther, faster, and deal more damage!"  Ava grinned waiting for something.
"Thanks, Ava. It's beautiful!"  Jessie was in awe of the complexity.  "Wait, you make weapons?"
"Yeah, that's my main job.  I do architect work as a side job."
"Mhm, cool."  Jessie said, still studying the bow.  Then she remembered.   Jessie quickly looked down her arms for a design and sure enough, on her right wrist, was a small circular design.  She gasped.  "I am Ilene!"
Ava gave her an "I told you so" smile. "Ready to start training sessions?"

   Chapter 3

Jessie gasped as she read it over and over.  I didn't think these would be out so soon!  She nervously twisted a strand of hair in her fingers.  "Where'd you find this?"
"Found it near the road, while coming here."  Nick ran his hand through his dark brown hair.  "If I were you, I wouldn't risk getting caught trying to get a horse."
"He's not just any horse!  Anyways, horses would make our trip faster."  Jessie said trying to be practical.
"Maybe, but where will we get the food for him or shelter him?  Plus, we wouldn't be able to ride a horse in a forest like this."  He emphasized with his hands. Jessie knew he was right.
"Can I just say good-bye to him?"  She pleaded with all her might.  Anyway, the whole reason for coming here was to get her horse.  She heard him sigh loudly, on purpose obviously.
"Fine, but don't tell me I didn't warn you.  I'll stay in the forest when we get near the town.  You can say your good-byes and come back.  Make it fast.  My parents will probably be looking for me, too."
"Alright, thanks!"  She bit her lip to keep from smiling too big.  Jessie was finally going to see her horse!

"Goliath!"  Jessie whispered, barely able to keep her voice down as she saw her horse in the distance, trotting around proudly.
"I'll be here when you come back.  Leave your backpack so you can walk faster and if anyone comes up to you, don't make eye contact."  Nick ordered, scanning to see if anyone was near the forest watching them.
Jessie did as told and flipped the hood of her jacket over her head for a small disguise.  She speed-walked into town and tried to look casual.
"Goliath!"  Jessie loudly whispered, reaching the paddock.  She leaned over the fence near where Goliath was now grazing.  He raised his head and his ears pricked up.  "Come here, boy!"  Jessie loudly whispered again.  Goliath nickered and trotted to her.  "Good day to you too!"  Jessie giggled as Goliath nudged her.  Her conscience nagged her to go back to the forest.  Just one more minute.  Jessie thought, pushing the warning away.  "I love you, my friend.  Don't ever forget me."  Jessie kissed Goliath on the nose, soaking up the last of her moments with him.
"Hey, Kid!  What are you doing near my horses!"  An older man angrily stomped over as Jessie was turning around.
"Excuse me, but that horse was mine and his name is Goliath!"  She shouted back, pointing at Goliath.  She was staring squarely in the man's face, her eyes ablaze.
"Wait a second, is this you?"  The man held up another "Missing" sheet.  Jessie yelled inwardly at herself for being so stupid, out-spoken, and doing what Nick said not to do.
"It is you!"  He ripped back Jessie's hood so fast it pulled her hair.  "I'm calling- Aagh!"  Jessie kicked the man in the kneecap as hard as she dared and climbed over the paddock fence.
"Giddy up, Goliath!" She cried as she mounted abroad the massive horse bareback, before she thought otherwise.  They soared over the fence and raced to the forest.  Jessie was laughing gleefully as the cool wind stung her cheeks and blew through her wavy hair.  She looked back to see the man crouching on the ground holding his knee with one hand and pointing at her with the other, shouting at a policeman.
Jessie hopped off Goliath and walked into the forest.  "Nick, where are you?"
"I'm taking precautions."  He stood up from behind tall rock.  "Unlike you, I see.  Do you ever think before you act?"  Nick was staring at Goliath.
"Oh, well, it's a long story..."
    "I saw mostly everything."
"Well, we should probably get going.  There are some policemen that are probably gonna come over soon."  Jessie could see in the policeman getting more people in the distance.
"Yeah, we will after you make your horse go back into town.  You see, if you keep him you will no longer be a runaway, but a criminal."  Nick said flatly.
"Fine."  Jessie gave him the stare.  She walked over to Goliath, who was staring at her near the forest and kissed him on the nose, once more.  "Good-bye, dear friend.  I may never see you again."  She hit his rump, which made Goliath run back to town.
"Let's go."  Jessie swiftly picked up her backpack and started walking.  She stared up at the sky to keep from crying.
"Hey, you kids! Stop right there!"  A policeman yelled.  They were a few yards behind Jessie and Nick, but were catching up.
"We should run." Jessie looked back, worry marked on her face.
"Yeah, go, go, go!!"  Nick started sprinting without his backpack.  Jessie also threw her backpack on the ground and started sprinting.  She jumped on a mossy log and pushed off speeding herself up.  Briers stung her legs and branches kept grabbing her hair, pulling at her roots.   Nick was right in front of her when all of a sudden he skidded to a stop.  Jessie couldn't stop in time and bumped into him making them both stumble.
    "Watch it!"
"Payback for bumping into me the first time."  Jessie brushed herself off, trying to catch her breath at the same time.
"This isn't funny, look."  Nick said, pointing down.
Jessie stuck her tongue out at him, but looked at where he was pointing.  "Oh."  They were standing at the edge of a ravine with a flowing river beneath.  She shuddered.  I almost pushed us both down there.  The policemen were getting closer.
"We have to jump in there.  Like...now!"  Nick looked back at her.
"Wait!  Shouldn't we think about this?"
"Not this time!"  Nick jumped off before Jessie could say another word.  The policemen were only a few feet away.
I never liked the idea of jumping off a high ledge.  Jessie hesitated for only a second, then leaped off.  She let out a shriek and closed her eyes.  She gasped when she hit the freezing water, filling her mouth with it. Jessie surfaced and swam to the shore where Nick was waiting.  "Oooh, this is bad.  We don't have our bags and we are soaked!"  Jessie was shivering as she wrung out her hair.
"At least we can walk faster."  Nick replied, shivering as well.
"Yeah, but what about food or water?"
"We'll find food on the way and we have water from the river."
"How can you be so optimistic on the verge of death?"
"We aren't on the verge of death."  Nick smirked.  "We should get going. We can follow the river for now.
   "Alright, let's go."

"So, have you found any good berries, yet?"  Jessie asked trudging along, her clothes still a little damp.  They had been walking for a couple hours, now.
"For the third time, no."  Nick answered pushing back a branch as he walked through it.  He let go of it just as Jessie was walking through and it smacked her across the face.
"Ow!"  Jessie yelped as she covered her eye with her hand.
"Sorry, didn't know you were right behind me."
    "Mhm."
    "Jessie, look!"
"Sorry, I can't see as I was smacked in the face a few seconds ago."  She said sarcastically, but stepped up to where he was.
"It's an old wooden cabin.  We can stay there for the night."  Nick said rolling his eyes.
"Awesome!"  Jessie was jogging towards it, excited to be sleeping in an actual house this time.
"I wouldn't just go inside without checking the perimeter.  Someone might live here."  Nick warned.
"It's way too old for someone to live in there!"  Jessie noted the molding wood and broken windows filled with cobwebs.

Nick hesitated, but Jessie walked in anyway, confident as always.  He walked up to the door of the cabin, but didn't go inside just yet.  "Jessie?"  No answer.  He put his ear to the slightly cracked door to see if he could hear anything.  Nothing.  Nick pulled out his 3 inch blade he kept in his pocket and slowly opened the door, which creaked loudly from old age.  All of a sudden, he was kicked in the leg from behind, and stumbled to the ground. His blade slipped from his grasp.  He turned around to see a huge man wearing an odd type of helmet and armor.  Nick snatched his blade and sliced the man's unprotected hand, as the man was about to grab him.  The man didn't even flinch, but held his injured hand as blood was oozing out.  Nick quickly scrambled to his feet and started to run when the man grabbed his arm with his bloody hand and hit him in the head with the pommel of his sword.  Everything went black.

Jessie gulped for air as she gained conscience.  When she walked into the cabin, someone had grabbed her and started choking her until she passed out, making her feel like she forgot how to breathe.  Jessie looked around the room she was in.  It had dim lighting, from one flickering light bulb.  Huh.  I would think I would be tied up or something and how is there electricity in an old cabin?  Jessie stood up and started walking around the room, which was bigger than she thought.  Jessie looked across the room and saw a woman drawing something, her raven hair hanging over her face, like a veil.  Scattered around her were dozens of architectural drawings.

"You're finally awake!"  The woman didn't look up from the picture she was drawing.  Jessie stood there, not knowing what she should do.  "Sorry the guys harmed you.  They were only trying to protect me."
"Um, where am I?  Jessie asked.
"You are in our underground base."  She looked up.  "Oh, you're just as beautiful as your mother was, Ilene!"  The woman's dark eyes twinkled with happiness.
Jessie was now in shock.  "My name is Jessie and my mom isn't gone."
"Figures.  I should have known Carmay would've changed your name."  The woman muttered to herself.  "Anyways, my name is Avalon.  You can call me Ava in this world.  I know you have a lot of questions going through you mind, but I will tell you everything you need to know, later!"
Jessie stood there with her mouth hanging open.  "What do you mean 'this world'?"
"As I said, I will tell you everything in due time."
"One more question, do you know where Nick is?"  Jessie asked.
"That boy?  He is in a cell because we don't know him."  You know me, though?  The thought swiftly went through Jessie's mind and back out.
"I know him!  Please, let him out!"  Jessie asked.
"Oh, sure.  If he's a friend to you, he's a friend to us!  Rayner, go let the boy out of the cell!"  She motioned to one of the guards that was standing near the door, whom Jessie has not seen.  "Lets go eat supper.  You must be starved!"
Jessie followed Ava out into a spacious dining room that was decorated simply with silver plates and a huge portrait of a family dressed in elaborate clothes, almost from another world, it seemed.

C.C.C. Writing Contest Pt. 2

Chapter 2

Jessie  walked and jogged for 4 hours in the direction of  her old, country town (she hoped she took a shortcut) before the mist turned into a downpour of rain.  Jessie groaned.  "Why, WHY didn't I think about bringing an umbrella?"  She scanned the open field of tall grass and barely spotted the tops of trees, about a good run away, through the blinding rain.  "It's so typical of me."  Jessie huffed as she ran to the forest, her heavy backpack thumping her back in a painful rhythm.  Her tall rain boots slipped on the thickening mud several times, splattering herself relentlessly.
"Finally....there...."  Jessie panted, trying to catch her breath at the edge of the forest.  She looked through the dense woods, trying to find a good hiking path.  I guess I'll start my own.  Jessie thought, still searching the forest.  She realized that it was still pouring and jogged into the dark, forest.
Finally shaded from most of the rain, Jessie started trying to find somewhere to lie down for the night.  She pulled out her tactical flashlight (as it was getting darker by the minute) and spotted three huge trees bent together that could work for a makeshift shelter.  Shining the flashlight, she could see that there was a smooth dirt floor and a long branch that could work as a chair, inside the little alcove.  Jessie set her flashlight on the ground to make a makeshift lantern.  Then, she set her pack down and changed into her extra set of clothes.  Jessie hung her muddy, wet clothes on a branch outside the shelter to dry.  She sighed as she wrapped up in her towel and fell asleep.
Jessie was riding a horse.  Was it Goliath?
She felt so free!  Riding over the lush, green grass.
The blue sky.  The sun warming her back.
  Everything was peaceful...and perfect...too perfect.

Jessie woke up shivering and starving, not having eaten last night.   The sun's rays were beaming down upon the forest warming her numb fingers and toes, while she ate one of the seven granola bars she packed.  She would buy more when she found a town.  Now that Jessie could see better, she studied the small shelter.  Everything was neat for an alcove in the forest.  She was getting skeptical.  Was someone here before me?  Then she noticed it.  A small maroon journal.  Someone was here!  And he or she is going to be back to get their journal!  Jessie grabbed the journal and flipped to the last page that someone wrote on.
Day 12
Nothing much happening here.  I'm going to escape soon.
Jessie checked the date on her watch.  It read; October 13  9:26am.  "That means he or she would have to have started this October 2nd if they've been here yesterday!"  She whispered to herself, hoping that wasn't the case.  She gasped as she flipped open the first page.
Day 1
October 2
Jessie skimmed through the page, picking out the important stuff.
My parents want me to get the business degree they couldn't achieve.  I don't.  I want to get noticed.  Be a hero maybe... that sounds stupid.  I have to work with my dad cutting down trees for new lots.  I found an alcove in the forest that I'm working in.  I'm going to go there everyday and figure out a way to escape.  To go on an adventure.  To change my boring life directed by my parents...not by me.   -Nicholas (A.K.A Nick) Greyson
Jessie's mouth hung open, still holding the open notebook in her hand.  Nick was just in here YESTERDAY!  We must have just crossed paths.  I need to go before he gets here!  Jessie flipped the pages until what she was looking for fell out...a map.  She grabbed the map and unfolded it. A forest area on the map was circled in bright red ink.  "That's probably where I am."  Jessie whispered.  Her finger traced where she was, all the way to where her old, country town was located at.  I knew I was close!  The girl thought delightfully.  All she had to do was follow a road that was near the forest.  Jessie dug in her backpack for a pencil.  Instead she pulled out a purple, broken crayon.  Really?  She thought, rolling her eyes.  She traced her path on the map with the crayon and then packed all her stuff.
She was quickly walking out while studying the map when, "BAM!"  Jessie fell to the ground with a thud.  Someone ran right into her.  "Uugh."  She moaned standing up while brushing herself off.  Her heart leaped into her throat when she saw...him.  She quickly hid the map behind her back, while thinking of something to say.

"Erm...hi...I didn't know someone else occupied this..."  Nick rubbed his head where he hit the ground.
"I didn't know you were coming so soon..."  The girl mumbled.  "I mean, hi.  I was just staying for the night, then moving on.  What's the rush anyways?  You nearly stampeded me!"  The girl asked, but her green eye's read differently... like she knew already.  Nick was getting the hint that she read his journal he left in the alcove last night.
"First of all, my name is Nick.  Second of all, where are you going?"  Nick asked, avoiding her question.
"I know, I mean, my name is Jessie."  She stepped over Nick's fallen backpack, avoiding his question now, and started walking out.

Please stop talking and let me out...  Jessie thought, hopefully, but Nick didn't catch the hint.
"How do you know my name."
Jessie smirked with her back turned to him and then turned around saying casually, "Oh, it's a long story, but basically, I can guess the name of a person by their appearance."  Jessie had to stop herself from laughing at the joke.  Nick wasn't smiling though.
"You read my journal, didn't you?"  He sighed as he reached over to where Jessie left the journal open on the ground.
"Well, you shouldn't leave your journal out in the woods like that... just sayin'."  She shrugged, trying to look innocent.
"How much did you read."  Nick asked, flipping the pages of his journal.  "And where's my map!"  He clenched his jaw and his brown eyes showed that he was tired of the jokes.
Jessie sighed. "All I read were the first and last page...and...I have the map...but wait!"  Nick was trying to grab it out of her hand she was waving.  "I really need it for my adven-, trip, I mean."  Jessica said correcting herself.  She knew he would want to come along if she said she was going on an adventure to escape her old life...just like him.  "If you found this map, you can get another one right?"  She hoped.
"No, because I drew that."  He took the map from her hand.  "And you drew on it...nice."  He sarcastically said.  "Well, I need to go on my adventure. Good-bye."  He picked up his backpack and nudged her aside.
Ouch.  Something tells me he's tired of me.  Jessie thought sadly, missing the company already.  It was her first time actually having an almost friend-like conversation with someone her own age.  Oooh no.  I need that map to get out of here!  Jessie saw him walking in the distance.  Maybe I should ask if he wants to accompany me to the town and then he can leave, since he has the map.  But then he might want to come along and that will ruin your solitude from society!  Jessie's inside battle raged for only a few seconds. She knew what she wanted to do.
Jessie ran up to Nick.  She heard him groan softly, which hurt her a little.  "Um, please, please, will you walk with me..just to the town?  I don't have a map and I really need to get there!"
    "What for."
"I need to get my horse."  She knew she had to tell the truth to make him come.  "I'm going on an adventure too.  Away from....my mom...and society, I guess."
Nick's face hinted a smile.  "Only if you do something."
    "Anything..well..not any-"
"Let me join you on your adventure."  He cut in.
Jessie smiled, but her eye's showed more excitement.  "Yeah, sure!"
"Oh, by the way, is this you?"  Nick held out a sheet of paper saying:
Missing!
Jessie Reese.  16 years of age.
Dark blonde hair.  Green eyes.
Approximately 5'6"
Might be trying to find her horse, Goliath.

A forest area on the map was circled in bright red ink.

Crazy. Crazy. Crazy. Writing Contest Pt. 1

Chapter 1

"Why do we have to move?"  Jessie's voice shook.
"Because I can get a better job in the city!  We'll get more money and you'll find more friends than you ever could in the country!" Her mom's smile sugarcoated the icy tone in her voice.
Lies. All of that was a lie.  Jessie could replay the scene over and over as if it were yesterday, instead of a month ago.  She felt anger boiling, since the move, but was overwhelmed with sadness as she glanced at the photo of her huge horse, Goliath. Or, used to be. Since they had to move to the city, her horse couldn't come.  Jessie started crying.  "You were more than enough for me, Goliath." She whispered, holding the picture.  Hot tears poured out as she became angry again.  The thoughts that kept coming back to her since the move, flowed through her mind with the same taunting rhythm.  Mom doesn't love me, she has never loved me!   She wants the money for herself, not for both of us!  Not that I cared about the money part.  She never loved horses or the country either.  I bet she's trying to ruin my life on purpose!  All of Jessie's feelings came crashing down on her.  She threw herself on her bed and started punching her pillow.  Why? Why me? Why are all these troubles happening to me? Why do I have to live with her!  Why does she hate me so much?  The last thought caught her by surprise.  She hates me.  "She hates me..."  Jessie said quietly this time, tasting the bitterness on her tongue.  Of course, she should have known already, but the thought never occurred to her that hard.  "I'm alone."

Lying on her bedroom floor, Jessie propped her feet up on her bed and started writing in her worn-out leather notebook.  A week has passed at my new high school and still, no one has wanted me for their friend.  It's like a tall brick wall between me and society.  If Goliath were here we would jump over the wall, never to see anyone again.  Jessie suddenly thought of something and started writing faster with excitement.  What if I didn't have to see society again?  My (evil) mom, classmates, and other pedestrians, would all be something in the past.  I could pack my bag and leave without anyone noticing!  Jessie smiled sadly and wrote the dreaded words.  Because...I'm alone.  Jessie erased the "could" and wrote "will" in its place, feeling more confident.  Jessie wrote one more note; I'll try to find Goliath (or another horse if I can't find him...) and steal borrow him for my journey.  She felt her stomach flop with adrenaline.

Jessie's plan to leave was going to take effect in two hours.  Today was the perfect day, since her mom works on Saturdays.  When her mom came home to an empty house, she would think Jessie was out with "friends" at the movies or something.  That would give Jessie at least five hours and if her mom went to bed, that would mean a whole twelve hours to be able to get out of town, until her mom tried to look for her.  That is, if Jessie's mom really loved her that much.
Writing in the small town park today was especially beautiful, this evening.  The soft cool breeze of fall, the cloudy day, and the dark hues of the fallen leaves gave Jessie inspiration for a poem instead of a story:
The fallen leaves;
Red, yellow, and orange hues swirl
From the gentle breeze
The soft scratch of the pencil and the breeze was all she heard in the quiet park.  Jessie checked her watch. Thirty minutes until the escape plan!  Why not leave early?  Jessie thought restlessly.
She checked her backpack for all of her supplies needed and stood up.  Jessie lifted her face to the sky and closed her eyes, feeling the mist of rain on her face.  She put her hands in her jacket and started walking down the road to freedom.

Please note: This is not about my mom and I!  I love my mom very much! Haha!
