My Entry For Hannah's Writing Contest

Hello!!
Hannah was doing a Writing Prompt Contest!
This was the prompt I used.

Here it is!
------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone has a gift. Me? I didn’t like mine. You see, I could tell how dangerous someone was on a scale of one to ten, one being a normal child, two being a normal teen, and three or four being a normal adult. My parents told me it’s “amazing,” but they’re used to it. They both have it, but it puts a lot of fear in me. What if I spotted someone who’s a five or above? I couldn’t fight well.
I wished I was a normal teen girl. At least I had one other skill. I stared at my empty pad of paper. No inspiration came to sketch, though. I scanned the cafeteria while finishing my sandwich. Two, two, two. Everyone’s a two, eat in peace. I sighed, fidgeting in the uncomfortable seats. Everyone sat in their cliques, boys daring each other, girls talking to one another. I didn’t fit in with any of them. Even the new kid found a place, seated with the jocks.
Speaking of which, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve run into him before. I searched my memory, fiddling with my glasses. I glanced up and a shiver went down my spine. He was staring directly at me and that’s when I remembered what happened years earlier.

10.
Run.
10.

He smiled and did a half-nod in greeting. I looked away, pretending not to see him, and ate the last bite of my sandwich.
“Long time no see, eh?” Kolin had walked up and slid into the seat in front of me. I looked up and smiled, hoping to hide my fear.
“Hi! Do I know you?” Hopefully my act worked.
“Don’t play dumb, Laynna. You and I both remember what happened in the park.” Renewed anger shown in his sharp, blue eyes. “I had promised to take the thing you loved most, as you had done to me, unless you helped. That offer is still valid.”
“Threatening won’t always make it you’re way." I snapped, forgetting to fake. "I told you over and over that I’m sorry. I regret it everyday.” My hands shook, so I hid them in my lap.
“Do you?” His voice rose and he stood up, looming over me. “Do you really? Because that’s going to help.” He banged his fist on the table. I gasped and glanced around at the students now watching. He seemed to notice and whispered, “We will continue this after school in the parking lot. If you don’t come, I will do as promised.” He stalked out of the cafeteria. The students resumed chatting after the outburst. I laid my head on my arms and sobbed.

Thanks for reading!

Originally, I was writing for a different prompt, but I realized that I couldn't post it 'cause it was waaay too long (and not even done yet)
I decided to change and write something else that's shorter. One day before the deadline...hahaha. It's still a cliffhanger though...

C.C.C. Writing Challenge Pt. 6

Chapter 6

Jessie caught Nick's arm to slow him down just as he was about to join the others outside.  The small clan was going to hangout around a bonfire.  "Hey, um, this might sound strange, but I think Daisy is hiding something...like...I don't know...maybe," Jessie stammered as she tried to think of the right words to say, "she has unordinary powers."
Nick raised his eyebrows at her.  "Unordinary powers?  Sure, I guess there are people from different planets, but 'powers'?"  He quoted with his fingers.  "You've got to be kidding me."
"Just keep your eyes on her."  Jessie whispered, so Daisy wouldn't hear, as they sat around the bonfire.  He glanced at her as if to say, Fine, but I think you're crazy.  Jessie clenched her jaw.  She did not like to be thought of as "crazy".

"So, do you see any constellations?"  Jessie asked Daisy.  They were both laying on the ground huddled in blankets now that the fall night became chilly.  Nick and Ava had retreated into the warm "base," so it was just the two of them.
"Just the Big Dipper and Little Dipper."  Daisy pointed each of them out.  "My friend is better at finding them than me."
    "What is your friend's name?"
    "Erika."
Jessie didn't want to be nosy, but couldn't resist asking, "You said something in our little chat, this morning, about something that happened to her, but didn't finish.  Can you tell me?"
Daisy took her time before answering, "She was brutally kidnapped just because she didn't give someone what they wanted.  Now I don't know where she is."  Jessie could barely see tears in Daisy's eyes in the fading light.
"Why are you guys so close?  She's not your family."  Jessie immediately felt guilty for asking.
Daisy looked a little offended.  "But she was!  You see, my parents were in an...accident...so Erika's family took me in.  I was very angry about life.  Erika helped me back up on my feet."  Daisy laughed a little, but it came out more like a sigh.
Jessie stared into the fire that was glowing only from the embers now.  All of a sudden, a big burst of fire came alive again.
Jessie jumped, not expecting that, and gaped at the fire.  "How did that-"  She watched a ribbon of fire dance and wave around away from the rest.
Daisy saw it, too, and gasped.  She stood up and ran into the base calling for Ava.  Jessie was confused and squinted at the dancing flames a bit harder, but ran in after Daisy.  She didn't know what it was, but she knew that Daisy did.
Jessie followed Ava and Daisy to a car in the underground garage and hopped in after them.  Jessie guessed that Nick caught the memo as he came to the car as well.
"Um, what are you guys doing?"  Daisy asked.
"Well, it seems that there is a problem and we want to help."  Jessie replied, acknowledging Nick and herself.  Daisy looked at Ava, almost pleadingly.
"They might as well know."  Ava responded to her expression.  Then, started driving out of the garage into a tunnel that led to a "real" street.
Daisy sighed, but explained, "That big burst of fire that you saw, Jessie, was a signal of help sent to me.  There are some people, five to be exact, that escaped to this world when Carmay destroyed theirs, just like how she destroyed your birth planet.  This may seem strange, but they have unique...abilities.  These five people can control either water, fire, wind, nature, or space."  She seemed wary of what she told.
Jessie gave an I-told-you-so look at Nick, but he was fastening his seat belt and not looking up at her.  On purpose, probably.  Jessie rolled her eyes and fastened hers too.
"Carmay has been searching for those five people ever since, so that she may learn the different powers.  She's succeeded in finding most of them.  My friend, Erika, is the person who can control fire, but only when she's near the area she wants it. Since she sent me the signal, she must've escaped Carmay and probably needs help, so we are heading where the signal indicated..."
We all gasped simultaneously as Ava pulled into the grassy lot in the middle of nowhere.
Smoke ascended up from the isolated house in slithering spirals. Windowpanes were shattered and bricks were fallen out of place.  The door was wrecked to bits and the grass around it was charred.  Mist from the cold, dewy ground mixing with the heat from the used-to-be fire made the scene creepier.
Daisy ran inside before anyone could stop her.  Ava handed each of the others a flashlight. This time Jessie took precautions and didn't run in straight away.
After checking the perimeter, Jessie crept inside the deserted-looking house with Ava and Nick trailing behind.  Looks like they had an obsession with china plates.  Jessie thought as she stepped over several fragments of floral, striped, animal printed, and other exotically designed china plates.
She finally found Daisy crouched, staring at a picture.  Jessie heard sniffles coming from the girl as she squatted next to her.
"They were my second family and now they, too, are gone."  Daisy stuffed the small picture in her jacket pocket.
"A family's love is always with you."  Jessie hugged her.  "Let's go see if we can find anything here to give us a clue to what happened."  She said to get Daisy's attention on something else.
"Carmay did this, obviously.  I have no idea why, though."  Daisy stood up and wiped the tears from her eyes, then, the girls started investigating.
Jessie skimmed her hand over different books including: The Story of Fire and The Importance of Knowing Your Power while looking for clues.  She let out a long, tired yawn; Jessie didn't know exactly what to look for.
Her heart jumped into her throat when her flashlight flicked across a hand on the ground.  Jessie let out a startled cry when she saw an unconscious body.
"What is it?"  Ava was the first to rush over.
"There is a boy on the floor."  Jessie overcame her shock and sat down next to the child to check his pulse.
"Sam!"  Daisy cried out when she saw the boy.  "Is he..."
"No..."  Jessie let out a sigh of relief, as did the others.
    Crash!
"What was that?"  She yelped, jumping to her feet on instinct.
"Where's Nick?"  Ava whispered, dagger in hand.  She scanned the room, but didn't dare move.
There was a moment of silence as the girls tried peering into the darkness.
"Do you think it's-"  Daisy started, but stopped when she heard the boy trying to utter something out of his dry lips.  Ava and Jessie crouched near him to hear better.
"They're...still-"  Sam coughed, licked his lips, and tried again, "They're still here."
"Who, Sam?  Who's here?"  Daisy gently asked.
"It's a trap!"  Sam, now fully aware of what was happening, gave out a wail and hid his head behind his arms.
Jessie shrieked as, out of nowhere, someone yanked her up by her hair, his nails digging into her scalp.

C. C. C. Writing Contest Pt. 4

Chapter 4

"So, do you know these people?"  Nick whispered to Jessie who was sitting next to him at the dining table.   Jessie, Nick, Ava, and the three guards were quiet while they were eating, except for a few whispers here and there.
"No, but they think they know me."  Jessie whispered back.
"How's that?"  Nick looked more focused on his food at the moment.
"I, supposedly, came from a different world and my 'real name' is Ilene."   Jessie still doubted that.
    "Interesting."
Jessie poked at her food, but caught the words of the guard, Rayner, whispering to Ava, "She was a tiny baby back then, how do you know if Ilene is her?   He tilted his head ever so slightly at Jessie.
"Do you not trust me, Captain?"  Ava asked aloud, surprised at the question.
"Yes, I do.  Sorry, M'lady."  Rayner stood up and sauntered out.
Jessie and Nick raised their eyebrows at each other, both shocked at the small dispute that just took place.  Ava shook her head, looking disappointed.  "Supper is over.  Everyone is dismissed."  Ava stood up.  "Nick and Ilene, I mean, Jessie, follow me."

How many rooms does this base have?  It's more like a mansion.  Jessie thought as she sat down on a cushion in a living room.  Jessie, Nick, and Ava were spaced around a glass coffee table.  In the middle was a red, sheer vase filled with a few flowers that looked like silver lilies.  Those can't be real.  Jessie touched them, however, just to make sure.  She pulled her hand away, quickly, realizing they felt real.
"Those are, indeed, lilies, as they call them here."  Ava smiled, reading her mind.  "And the silver is real!  In our land, we used to have fields of them!  Gold, silver, bronze, diamond, ruby and others.  It was so pretty."  Ava seemed to be in a haze.  "Anyway, I wanted to tell you about why we came here from our world, and to prove that you, Jessie, are actually Ilene."  She said snapping back to reality.  Jessie gulped, not sure if she was ready or wanting to hear the truth.  Nick, on the other hand, was ready for this "interesting" story.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was, once, a land named Atrolia.  Ruled by the peacekeepers, King Tourel and Queen Finlyn, they've kept peace with the other lands for decades.  They have never needed guards or knights, so they stopped recruiting them.  More dropped out as they weren't required.  The captain of the knights, Kopor, didn't drop out, as he knew, if anyone wanted to take over Atrolia, the king wouldn't have enough knights to fight.  He secretly held training's for civilians to attend.  Kopor would make them hunt for food, as well as other different practices, so they wouldn't think they were unneeded and drop out.
    Suddenly, a month after all this, Carmay, the queen of another land near Atrolia, started attacking villages near the castle.  Carmay never liked keeping peace and enjoyed fighting.  She knew if she waited long enough there wouldn't be enough knights, in Atrolia, to fight her's.  The king and queen were terrified, but Kopor told them what he did.  He sent the trained civilians to battle, though there still weren't as many knights as Carmay's.  She and her men destroyed village after village, knight after knight.  The king's knights were diminishing fast, so the rest stayed at the castle.
    During all this, Kopor's wife, Rayna, gave birth to a girl, named Ilene.  They were both captured, along with Avalon, Rayna's young sister, who was 14 years old at the time.  Carmay would use them for a trade, she hoped.  She captureed them because the queen and king didn't have a child and Kopor was their most trusted captain.
    After she received approval to see King Tourel and Queen Finlyn, she told them her trade.  She would give Rayna, Ilene, and Avalon back if she could rule this land and Tourel and Finlyn would be banished.  If not that, then Carmay would take the captives and leave.
Before the king could answer, a knight ran in announcing the death of Kopor.  He had been trampled by horses protecting a little girl trying to catch her loose pet, that she adored.  When Rayna heard this, she fell apart.  She sobbed and managed to say that she would rather leave with Carmay than live here without Kopor, so the trade was set.  Carmay smirked, pulled out a small item and said that she never said where they would leave.  She threw the object on the ground and it turned into a portal.  She unlocked the cage and dragged the victims out.  Then she changed her mind saying that she would rather all of Atrolia die, instead.  She had planted a huge bomb in the center of Atrolia.  Carmay had meant for all this to happen.  Very quickly, Rayna, who could do any spell she wanted once in her life, put a saftey spell on Ilene.  Ilene would be immune from Carmay's power till she was 16.  Then, Rayna told Avalon to take Ilene and protect her and tell her everything that has happened.   They would have to defeat Carmay, so she wouldn't destroy the place where they were going.  Carmay had just went through the portal, so Avalon jumped in before it would disappear.
Walking through light and darkness, it was hard for Avalon to see where the portal was taking them.  Then, a big bounce made her lose hold of Ilene.  She was trying to find her through the flashes of light, but Carmay found her first.  She tried to kill her, but realized that she was under a spell.  Carmay took Ilene while Avalon was hiding, scared for Ilene's and her life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When we arrived at our destination, which was in a busy city, thankfully, Carmay didn't see me.  She went her own way and I ran through forest after forest until I found this.  You should have seen me, though!  I was jumping at the littlest things, like when people wearing hoodies bumped past me with things stuck in their ears, which I now know are called earbuds!  I thought it was some kind of mind control thing!"  Ava laughed as she finished her story.  "Oh, and somehow the knights came here too! They must've found another portal and came to help me defeat Carmay!  I'm glad because three against her wouldn't be a very happy ending."  Ava finished with one breath.
"So, how does this tell me I'm Ilene?"  Jessie asked, still doubting the whole story.
"Well, on your sixteenth birthday your spell's time will be up.  Meaning you won't be protected.  After this happens, like with all spells, you will find a design or something on your arms somewhere!  Plus, I know when I've found the right girl!"  Ava said smiling.
"My sixteenth birthday is tomorrow."  Jessie chewed her lip.  If all of this really is true, she would have to help defeat an evil queen, who was her mom for fifteen years.  "So, you would be my aunt?"  I asked realizing this from the story.
"Yep!"  Ava grinned.  "Well, I'll show you guys to your rooms.  You guys must be tired from your trek.  There are clean clothes in each of your rooms."
"You knew I was coming too?"  Nick asked skeptically.
"We prepare for anything!"  Ava responded, laughing.

Jessie plopped down on her new bed.  Her bedroom was painted sky blue and decorated with green and white furniture.  It felt nice to be dressed in comfy pajamas again.  She went to sleep hoping this was all a dream and would wake up in her simple life once again, but that was not to be so.

"Happy birthday!!"  Ava whispered in Jessie's face.  Jessie groaned, moving her pillow over her face.   "I have a present for you!  Wake up!!! Please!?"  Ava was shaking her now.
"Ugh... fine."  Jessie pushed herself to a sitting position, still blurry-eyed.  Ava laid something in her lap.  Jessie wiped her eyes and looked at what Ava gave her.  It was a black bow and arrow set with electric blue lines throughout the bow and the on the tips of the arrows.
"I made this!  It's an electric bow!  The arrows also have electricity in them!  Basically, the arrows fly farther, faster, and deal more damage!"  Ava grinned waiting for something.
"Thanks, Ava. It's beautiful!"  Jessie was in awe of the complexity.  "Wait, you make weapons?"
"Yeah, that's my main job.  I do architect work as a side job."
"Mhm, cool."  Jessie said, still studying the bow.  Then she remembered.   Jessie quickly looked down her arms for a design and sure enough, on her right wrist, was a small circular design.  She gasped.  "I am Ilene!"
Ava gave her an "I told you so" smile. "Ready to start training sessions?"

   Chapter 3

Jessie gasped as she read it over and over.  I didn't think these would be out so soon!  She nervously twisted a strand of hair in her fingers.  "Where'd you find this?"
"Found it near the road, while coming here."  Nick ran his hand through his dark brown hair.  "If I were you, I wouldn't risk getting caught trying to get a horse."
"He's not just any horse!  Anyways, horses would make our trip faster."  Jessie said trying to be practical.
"Maybe, but where will we get the food for him or shelter him?  Plus, we wouldn't be able to ride a horse in a forest like this."  He emphasized with his hands. Jessie knew he was right.
"Can I just say good-bye to him?"  She pleaded with all her might.  Anyway, the whole reason for coming here was to get her horse.  She heard him sigh loudly, on purpose obviously.
"Fine, but don't tell me I didn't warn you.  I'll stay in the forest when we get near the town.  You can say your good-byes and come back.  Make it fast.  My parents will probably be looking for me, too."
"Alright, thanks!"  She bit her lip to keep from smiling too big.  Jessie was finally going to see her horse!

"Goliath!"  Jessie whispered, barely able to keep her voice down as she saw her horse in the distance, trotting around proudly.
"I'll be here when you come back.  Leave your backpack so you can walk faster and if anyone comes up to you, don't make eye contact."  Nick ordered, scanning to see if anyone was near the forest watching them.
Jessie did as told and flipped the hood of her jacket over her head for a small disguise.  She speed-walked into town and tried to look casual.
"Goliath!"  Jessie loudly whispered, reaching the paddock.  She leaned over the fence near where Goliath was now grazing.  He raised his head and his ears pricked up.  "Come here, boy!"  Jessie loudly whispered again.  Goliath nickered and trotted to her.  "Good day to you too!"  Jessie giggled as Goliath nudged her.  Her conscience nagged her to go back to the forest.  Just one more minute.  Jessie thought, pushing the warning away.  "I love you, my friend.  Don't ever forget me."  Jessie kissed Goliath on the nose, soaking up the last of her moments with him.
"Hey, Kid!  What are you doing near my horses!"  An older man angrily stomped over as Jessie was turning around.
"Excuse me, but that horse was mine and his name is Goliath!"  She shouted back, pointing at Goliath.  She was staring squarely in the man's face, her eyes ablaze.
"Wait a second, is this you?"  The man held up another "Missing" sheet.  Jessie yelled inwardly at herself for being so stupid, out-spoken, and doing what Nick said not to do.
"It is you!"  He ripped back Jessie's hood so fast it pulled her hair.  "I'm calling- Aagh!"  Jessie kicked the man in the kneecap as hard as she dared and climbed over the paddock fence.
"Giddy up, Goliath!" She cried as she mounted abroad the massive horse bareback, before she thought otherwise.  They soared over the fence and raced to the forest.  Jessie was laughing gleefully as the cool wind stung her cheeks and blew through her wavy hair.  She looked back to see the man crouching on the ground holding his knee with one hand and pointing at her with the other, shouting at a policeman.
Jessie hopped off Goliath and walked into the forest.  "Nick, where are you?"
"I'm taking precautions."  He stood up from behind tall rock.  "Unlike you, I see.  Do you ever think before you act?"  Nick was staring at Goliath.
"Oh, well, it's a long story..."
    "I saw mostly everything."
"Well, we should probably get going.  There are some policemen that are probably gonna come over soon."  Jessie could see in the policeman getting more people in the distance.
"Yeah, we will after you make your horse go back into town.  You see, if you keep him you will no longer be a runaway, but a criminal."  Nick said flatly.
"Fine."  Jessie gave him the stare.  She walked over to Goliath, who was staring at her near the forest and kissed him on the nose, once more.  "Good-bye, dear friend.  I may never see you again."  She hit his rump, which made Goliath run back to town.
"Let's go."  Jessie swiftly picked up her backpack and started walking.  She stared up at the sky to keep from crying.
"Hey, you kids! Stop right there!"  A policeman yelled.  They were a few yards behind Jessie and Nick, but were catching up.
"We should run." Jessie looked back, worry marked on her face.
"Yeah, go, go, go!!"  Nick started sprinting without his backpack.  Jessie also threw her backpack on the ground and started sprinting.  She jumped on a mossy log and pushed off speeding herself up.  Briers stung her legs and branches kept grabbing her hair, pulling at her roots.   Nick was right in front of her when all of a sudden he skidded to a stop.  Jessie couldn't stop in time and bumped into him making them both stumble.
    "Watch it!"
"Payback for bumping into me the first time."  Jessie brushed herself off, trying to catch her breath at the same time.
"This isn't funny, look."  Nick said, pointing down.
Jessie stuck her tongue out at him, but looked at where he was pointing.  "Oh."  They were standing at the edge of a ravine with a flowing river beneath.  She shuddered.  I almost pushed us both down there.  The policemen were getting closer.
"We have to jump in there.  Like...now!"  Nick looked back at her.
"Wait!  Shouldn't we think about this?"
"Not this time!"  Nick jumped off before Jessie could say another word.  The policemen were only a few feet away.
I never liked the idea of jumping off a high ledge.  Jessie hesitated for only a second, then leaped off.  She let out a shriek and closed her eyes.  She gasped when she hit the freezing water, filling her mouth with it. Jessie surfaced and swam to the shore where Nick was waiting.  "Oooh, this is bad.  We don't have our bags and we are soaked!"  Jessie was shivering as she wrung out her hair.
"At least we can walk faster."  Nick replied, shivering as well.
"Yeah, but what about food or water?"
"We'll find food on the way and we have water from the river."
"How can you be so optimistic on the verge of death?"
"We aren't on the verge of death."  Nick smirked.  "We should get going. We can follow the river for now.
   "Alright, let's go."

"So, have you found any good berries, yet?"  Jessie asked trudging along, her clothes still a little damp.  They had been walking for a couple hours, now.
"For the third time, no."  Nick answered pushing back a branch as he walked through it.  He let go of it just as Jessie was walking through and it smacked her across the face.
"Ow!"  Jessie yelped as she covered her eye with her hand.
"Sorry, didn't know you were right behind me."
    "Mhm."
    "Jessie, look!"
"Sorry, I can't see as I was smacked in the face a few seconds ago."  She said sarcastically, but stepped up to where he was.
"It's an old wooden cabin.  We can stay there for the night."  Nick said rolling his eyes.
"Awesome!"  Jessie was jogging towards it, excited to be sleeping in an actual house this time.
"I wouldn't just go inside without checking the perimeter.  Someone might live here."  Nick warned.
"It's way too old for someone to live in there!"  Jessie noted the molding wood and broken windows filled with cobwebs.

Nick hesitated, but Jessie walked in anyway, confident as always.  He walked up to the door of the cabin, but didn't go inside just yet.  "Jessie?"  No answer.  He put his ear to the slightly cracked door to see if he could hear anything.  Nothing.  Nick pulled out his 3 inch blade he kept in his pocket and slowly opened the door, which creaked loudly from old age.  All of a sudden, he was kicked in the leg from behind, and stumbled to the ground. His blade slipped from his grasp.  He turned around to see a huge man wearing an odd type of helmet and armor.  Nick snatched his blade and sliced the man's unprotected hand, as the man was about to grab him.  The man didn't even flinch, but held his injured hand as blood was oozing out.  Nick quickly scrambled to his feet and started to run when the man grabbed his arm with his bloody hand and hit him in the head with the pommel of his sword.  Everything went black.

Jessie gulped for air as she gained conscience.  When she walked into the cabin, someone had grabbed her and started choking her until she passed out, making her feel like she forgot how to breathe.  Jessie looked around the room she was in.  It had dim lighting, from one flickering light bulb.  Huh.  I would think I would be tied up or something and how is there electricity in an old cabin?  Jessie stood up and started walking around the room, which was bigger than she thought.  Jessie looked across the room and saw a woman drawing something, her raven hair hanging over her face, like a veil.  Scattered around her were dozens of architectural drawings.

"You're finally awake!"  The woman didn't look up from the picture she was drawing.  Jessie stood there, not knowing what she should do.  "Sorry the guys harmed you.  They were only trying to protect me."
"Um, where am I?  Jessie asked.
"You are in our underground base."  She looked up.  "Oh, you're just as beautiful as your mother was, Ilene!"  The woman's dark eyes twinkled with happiness.
Jessie was now in shock.  "My name is Jessie and my mom isn't gone."
"Figures.  I should have known Carmay would've changed your name."  The woman muttered to herself.  "Anyways, my name is Avalon.  You can call me Ava in this world.  I know you have a lot of questions going through you mind, but I will tell you everything you need to know, later!"
Jessie stood there with her mouth hanging open.  "What do you mean 'this world'?"
"As I said, I will tell you everything in due time."
"One more question, do you know where Nick is?"  Jessie asked.
"That boy?  He is in a cell because we don't know him."  You know me, though?  The thought swiftly went through Jessie's mind and back out.
"I know him!  Please, let him out!"  Jessie asked.
"Oh, sure.  If he's a friend to you, he's a friend to us!  Rayner, go let the boy out of the cell!"  She motioned to one of the guards that was standing near the door, whom Jessie has not seen.  "Lets go eat supper.  You must be starved!"
Jessie followed Ava out into a spacious dining room that was decorated simply with silver plates and a huge portrait of a family dressed in elaborate clothes, almost from another world, it seemed.

Crazy. Crazy. Crazy. Writing Contest Pt. 1

Chapter 1

"Why do we have to move?"  Jessie's voice shook.
"Because I can get a better job in the city!  We'll get more money and you'll find more friends than you ever could in the country!" Her mom's smile sugarcoated the icy tone in her voice.
Lies. All of that was a lie.  Jessie could replay the scene over and over as if it were yesterday, instead of a month ago.  She felt anger boiling, since the move, but was overwhelmed with sadness as she glanced at the photo of her huge horse, Goliath. Or, used to be. Since they had to move to the city, her horse couldn't come.  Jessie started crying.  "You were more than enough for me, Goliath." She whispered, holding the picture.  Hot tears poured out as she became angry again.  The thoughts that kept coming back to her since the move, flowed through her mind with the same taunting rhythm.  Mom doesn't love me, she has never loved me!   She wants the money for herself, not for both of us!  Not that I cared about the money part.  She never loved horses or the country either.  I bet she's trying to ruin my life on purpose!  All of Jessie's feelings came crashing down on her.  She threw herself on her bed and started punching her pillow.  Why? Why me? Why are all these troubles happening to me? Why do I have to live with her!  Why does she hate me so much?  The last thought caught her by surprise.  She hates me.  "She hates me..."  Jessie said quietly this time, tasting the bitterness on her tongue.  Of course, she should have known already, but the thought never occurred to her that hard.  "I'm alone."

Lying on her bedroom floor, Jessie propped her feet up on her bed and started writing in her worn-out leather notebook.  A week has passed at my new high school and still, no one has wanted me for their friend.  It's like a tall brick wall between me and society.  If Goliath were here we would jump over the wall, never to see anyone again.  Jessie suddenly thought of something and started writing faster with excitement.  What if I didn't have to see society again?  My (evil) mom, classmates, and other pedestrians, would all be something in the past.  I could pack my bag and leave without anyone noticing!  Jessie smiled sadly and wrote the dreaded words.  Because...I'm alone.  Jessie erased the "could" and wrote "will" in its place, feeling more confident.  Jessie wrote one more note; I'll try to find Goliath (or another horse if I can't find him...) and steal borrow him for my journey.  She felt her stomach flop with adrenaline.

Jessie's plan to leave was going to take effect in two hours.  Today was the perfect day, since her mom works on Saturdays.  When her mom came home to an empty house, she would think Jessie was out with "friends" at the movies or something.  That would give Jessie at least five hours and if her mom went to bed, that would mean a whole twelve hours to be able to get out of town, until her mom tried to look for her.  That is, if Jessie's mom really loved her that much.
Writing in the small town park today was especially beautiful, this evening.  The soft cool breeze of fall, the cloudy day, and the dark hues of the fallen leaves gave Jessie inspiration for a poem instead of a story:
The fallen leaves;
Red, yellow, and orange hues swirl
From the gentle breeze
The soft scratch of the pencil and the breeze was all she heard in the quiet park.  Jessie checked her watch. Thirty minutes until the escape plan!  Why not leave early?  Jessie thought restlessly.
She checked her backpack for all of her supplies needed and stood up.  Jessie lifted her face to the sky and closed her eyes, feeling the mist of rain on her face.  She put her hands in her jacket and started walking down the road to freedom.

Please note: This is not about my mom and I!  I love my mom very much! Haha!

A Shimmer of Hope

By Joy

Looking out the window
Clora cried out
The hail took all
She knew without a doubt

She stood outside
The gray clouds high
The flowers were gone
That Clora depended on
As they were the only remembrance
Of her deceased parents

She started to cry
And something caught her eye
A shimmer of hope
A push of faith
One single flower
Remained in its place

Thanks for reading!  Hope you like it!
